Protection of the shore line
The AGM of the Association “Estuaire pour tous” was held on the 2nd October. This association brings together people from both shores who are interested in working for the preservation of the estuary of the Gironde.
More than once this association has proved that such activities are necessary and that they can stop developments that endanger the environment and threaten the inhabitants of the region :
• The project to install a gas terminal was stopped.
• Gravel extraction from the sea bed right next to the Charente-Maritime coast at the entrance of the Gironde estuary was abandoned
(Info 12).
• Pollution levels in the estuary are now regularly monitored.
• Participation in various studies led to the creation of the National Marine Park
(Info 14) as well as the Regional Nature Park.
• Participation in the Council for the development of the Port of Bordeaux
(Info 13) facilitated the avoidance of undesirable outcomes.
• Measures to counter the silting up of the shores were necessary to maintain the quality of the edges.
• The association kept itself well-informed about the project for an offshore wind farm off the coasts of the Île d’Oléron and Île de Ré.
Since it was created in 2007 the association has attracted around 5600 members. Today, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of members has been considerably reduced. This situation is even more dramatic because the association is represented in many organisations concerned with the environment, and urgently needs people and funding to pursue its aims.
On the website estuaire pour tous you can consult files in progress, the archives, journals, details of how to join, and subscribe to the newsletter. You can also find publications on the group’s Facebook page.
Join the association and increase it’s potential. You will also be making your own contribution to protecting the Gironde Estuary.
